The Eye of Faith
Watchman Nee
When I visited Kaifeng the second time, I told people there that we were freed from sin through death. A certain lady said to me: “The Bible says I am dead. Is there any way that makes me really dead? I know if only I die, I will be freed from sin.” So I told her: “In Christ we died. In ourselves we are still alive. As long as you are in Christ, you remain dead. Whenever you live in yourself you are alive. For the death that God has given is in Christ. If you look at yourself, you are not dead. Therefore, you should never see yourself in your own self. You should use the eyes of faith to see yourself dead in Christ. Then you die. God never works in you separately. He works only in Christ. If you remain all the time in Christ, all that He is and accomplishes flows into you.”
The light bulb itself does not give light, but when the electric current comes to it, it is set aglow. In ourselves we cannot fail to lose our temper, but in Christ we may naturally be patient.
Some seek death in life, but we find life in death. We must us the eye of faith to see ourselves as being dead in Christ. We in our own selves are not the object of our faith. For the anchor of our faith is Christ. If I, Nee, Look within myself, I cannot find death though I have already died in Christ. I do not need to die again. Thank God, in Christ we died. The failure of many Christians lies here. They seek for death in themselves, and they never find it. For when you examine within yourself as to whether you are dead, you continue to live in your own self and are therefore very much alive. Death is in Christ, not in your self.
It is a strange thing that we live in two realms. We were originally in Adam, but now God placed us in Christ. Yet today in actual living we frequently return to Adam. The defeat of many Christians comes from looking within themselves, thus living in their own selves.
There was a sister who was well experienced in the Lord. When people asked her about the secret of Christian living, her answer was: “If you want to experience victorious life and not be defeated, you must never look at yourself outside of Christ. For whenever you see yourself outside of Christ, you will find your former unsaved condition. In looking within yourself, you use your own eyesight and feeling. Only when you look at Christ, you exercise faith and look with God’s eye.”
