We’ve all got a favourite bit of the Bible. “The Lord’s my shepherd…”, “Love is patient, love is kind…”, “Judge not lest ye be judged…” Verses that comfort and inspire and challenge.

Isn’t it a shame it isn’t all that good?

You don’t need to be a purple-faced atheist to notice that the Bible is a pretty mixed book. For every hymn to the loveliness of love, there’s a story about God squishing someone because they worshipped the wrong god. For every wise and helpful saying, there’s an incomprehensible law. For every verse that Martin Luther King proclaimed in the streets of Alabama, there’s one that Fred Phelps shouts outside gay funerals.

That’s why Ship of Fools is launching a poll to find the worst verse in the whole Bible. We want you to tell us which sacred text makes you take out your red pen. Which hallowed verse makes you laugh for all the wrong reasons. Which piece of holy writ troubles you at night and keeps you awake in sermons?

Dr. Price answers the question:

What evidence is there (if any) for scribes working on the Christian/Greek scriptures to mine quotes from various sources including the Hebrew Bible or Septuagint? Often I read in the NT someone saying something along the lines of ‘the scriptures say this’ or ‘it is written’ but I have no idea what text they are talking about. I am aware of this story in Mark 7 where Jesus is quoting the Septuagint to Palestinian rabbis and i think, yeah not likely! Can that be attributed to quote mining? And what exactly was the point of quote mining-simply to enhance the literary style of the writer?

This is a collection of anti-religious quotes I recieved recently in an email from a friend.
If you’re relgious, you’ve been warned. Don’t whinge to me that you’re offended by the content. If you look at things labelled ‘offensive’, don’t be surprised if you’re offended.
To everyone else, this is just up for a chuckle…
Enjoy!
